Music

Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act.  It brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development.  As an integral part of culture, past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between the home, school and the wider world.

The teaching of music develops pupils’ ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgments about musical quality.  It encourages active involvement in different forms of amateur music making, both individual and communal, developing a sense of group identity and togetherness.  It also increases self-discipline and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment.

From Year 2, pupils can start learning to play an instrument, beginning with the recorder. We offer lessons with music teachers specialising in specific instruments to ensure our pupils are given the best possible teaching.

At The Mall, we have regular concerts from each year group and also have a fabulous prom in the summer, where pupils in Year 3 to 6 all perform together. This includes a range of performances from recorder groups, to our school rock band, to our string orchestra. There are many opportunities for pupils to flourish within music at The Mall.

For more information on music at The Mall, please contact our Head of Music – Mrs Colclough.

Art

Art is an important part of the school experience at The Mall.  From the moment your child joins the school, they will take part in a range of creative art activities. In Reception to Year 3, they are taught art in their classroom and then from Years 4 to 6, they are taught in a purpose-built, spacious studio. There they will be taught technical and practical skills to enable them to use a wide range of materials confidently and competently, including firing their own clay works of art in our kiln. Each year we also host an art fair in the summer term, where the children create bespoke artwork for the fair and parents can donate to support our partnership school Chitsime.

From Year 4,children are also taught design technology and are able to use equipment including a laser cutter, milling machine and 3D printer.

Art and DT curriculum guides can be found here.

Drama

In Year 3 to 5, pupils take part in our annual Musicals at The Mall show. Each year group performs a number of songs from a different musical to parents and encourages them to be confident and work together.

In Year 6, pupils perform an end of year show to both the school and parents. Recent shows include Shakespeare Rocks and The Wizard of Oz. Pupils can also take the LAMDA exam.
